K-dramatized [1]: My Love from the Star

I AM A KOREAN IN DISGUISE! SHH!
This is a monthly feature in my blog where I discuss and FANGIRL about korean series. As a big fan of the korean wave aka kpop & korean dramas, I really want to discuss, recommend and just spotlight some of the k-dramas I truly love over the years. Some of these dramas I've already watched 4 or 5 years ago and some just recently. This feature also serves as my recommendation meme for those who are looking for past time aside from reading. I'll also do the "If you liked this (title of the book) you might also want to watch this (insert k-drama here)."     시작합시다 (let's start)?

My school started last April 21 hence the lack of post in my blog. It's been 10 days and I haven't even post a single review. I really didn't start any books recently except for Shadow and Bones (which I am still finishing) and some reread. ;) But aside from stuDYING and reading (which actually hardly happened), I've been obsessing over a particular drama.... THIS DESTROYED ME. Just kidding

MY LOVE FROM THE STAR
Aired: December 18, 2013 - Febuary 27, 2014
Episodes: 21 + one special broadcast
Genre: Romance, Comedy, Sci-fi
Casts: Kim Soo Hyun as Do Min Joon, Jun Ji Hyun as Cheong Song Yi, Park Hae Jin as Lee Hwi Kyung, Yoo In Na as Yoo Se Mi

Summary (taken at AsianWiki. this is the best summary of the series):
Do Min-joon is an alien that landed on Earth in the year 1609, during the Joseon Dynasty. As he tries to help a young girl, Yi-hwa, from falling off a cliff, he misses his trip back to his planet and is stranded on Earth for the next four centuries. He possesses a near-perfect appearance, enhanced physical abilities involving his vision, hearing and speed, and a cynical, jaded view regarding human beings. As time goes by, Min-joon is forced to take on a new identity every ten years, as his human appearance never ages.

In the present, he works as a college professor and finds out that due to a comet coming in three months, he will be able to return to his home planet. In the meantime, he accidentally meets famous actress Cheon Song-yi, the biggest Hallyu star in Korea, when she moves in next door to his luxurious apartment and also turns out to be attending his classes at college. Song-yi is an obnoxious, entitled attention seeker, someone who became a top star in her teens and never learned how to live a normal life. Min-joon finds out that Song-yi looks like the young girl he fell in love with in the Joseon era. He tries to keep himself away from her as he needs to leave the planet, but often finds himself failing to do so.

However, Song-yi gets entangled in the dangerous game of Lee Jae-kyung, the elder brother of Hwi-kyung, who has been her friend since middle school and is in love with her. As Jae-kyung tries to silence Song-yi, Min-joon finds himself saving her multiple times and eventually the neighbors fall for each other. But Jae-kyung turns out to be much more dangerous than Min-joon suspected and he mysteriously also starts to lose control over his superpowers, making his only friend and confidant, Lawyer Jang worried about his life and return to space.
This drama kept me awake for three straight days despite my schedule. There are so many reasons to watch and like this drama. First and foremost, I really give most of the credits to the two main characters, Do Min Joon and Cheon Song Yi. Their characters are very dimensional, dynamic and unique. They both have a story to tell and experiences to share.

DO MIN JOON aka life ruiner

this includes extreme gushing and internal screaming bye
  • HOTTIE ALIEN ALERT!!!!!1111111
  • He's character is not easy to understand. He's very distant from people and he's really a smarty-pants. COLD, that's him. He rarely talks and he keeps his face straight with no emotions most of the time BUT when he shows emotions and affection I AM A GONER!!!!!!!11 ESPECIALLY WHEN HE SMILES.................... O<-<
  • He has super powers such as ability to teleport, stop time, psycho-telekinesis, but he doesn't have control over the four elements such as air, water, earth, fire.
  • HIS BANGS. YEP. I love his bangs. Dre @ Sporadic Reads has also a fetish over the bangs! HAHA
  • KIM SOO HYUN played the role Do Min Joon, and he is another bane of my existence. I am not even sure if I like Do Min Joon or Kim Soo Hyun. Maybe both. Yes both. He's not new to me anymore, I've already watched his other dramas before, but while I was watching MLFTS, I was overwhelmed and astonished of how immensely he improved! AND how immensely I grew infatuated to him more. THE FEELS WERE ALL OVER THE PLACE. He's just so charming and swoon-worthy. He portrayed the role well and there's no need for any background music during the heavy drama scenes, for just one look at his sullen/sad/crying face, you'll burst into droplets of tears OR a very deep sad face =(((((((((((
CHEON SONG YI aka the goddess.

  • People who hates narcissistic, obstinate and attention seeker characters will loathe her. But I guess, there is more than meets the eye in Song Yi's character. I liked her so much, she's confident and she knows what she wants in life. She knows when to fight and when to give up. She knows how to love herself and also to love others to point of being altruistic.
  • She's perfectly flawed, she's very vulnerable, but she conceals her weaknesses with a mask because of her status in Korea. Yep, she's not a very likable character at first, but as soon as the story deepened, she grew in me. I learned so much from her character. She's brave, she goes through A LOT of pain and disappointment, but she tenaciously keeps a solid wall inside her.
  • She speaks of what other actresses have to go through everyday. The pressure that weighs on their shoulders is unbearable, but they have to carry it if they want to keep their title in this industry.
  • SHE'S FUNNY, RIDICULOUS (IN A GOOD SENSE), and really GOOFY. She entertained me with her funny antics, absurd and silly actions and especially the way she acts around Do Min Joon. What's not to like about that?
  • She's desperate for affection, love, and life-long commitment because of what happened with her father, that's why it's really hard for her to open her heart for anyone unless she's sure. But man when cupid started to play its tricks, I greatly ache and empathize for her!
  • JI HYUN who played the role really did a great job. Actually, she's familiar to me because I already watched My Sassy Girl last 2006 BUT I barely remember her acting there. For crissake it's been 8 years. Anyway, the role came natural for her, I feel her emotion and she's very talented and flexible actress. When it comes to the heavy drama parts, the way she cried, the way she slowly muttered the words, the way she expressed emotions BAAAAM SO GOOD!
PLOT (we have murders here!)
Fiction at its best, yes, we are introduced to a really good-looking alien who missed his "flight" back home. There's sci-fi and ample amount of general science that concerns different meteoroids, meteor showers, stars and UFOs! The good thing about this drama is that in order to showcase immortality they didn't use vampires like the other cliches, they used an alien. But with that, I was a tad disappointed since there was no closure to where he really originated. I wish more explanation and description of Do Min Joon's home. On the other hand, just like any typical korean drama, the comedy here wasn't neglected. In fact, the first 12-14 episodes were full of funny and witty battles among the characters. And the gag jokes really made me laugh. Now let's talk about another important aspect in the plot, the thriller part in which there's this murderer who is so greedy and haughty that he kills just to get what he wants. Typical antagonost, eh? But man, what's so distinguishing about that character is he goes from INNOCENT to CONNIVING CRIMINAL in a snap! Occasionally, the mood will switch from light drama to heavy to intense then down to light again. Although I would've love it more if the latter episodes were REALLY intense that my breathe will stall. BONUS! Every chapter there'll be a mini-interview like with Do Min Joon. It is also like a nepilogue or diary in where he reflects the things happening in his life at that moment. I swear there's so many things to learn from there.

ROMANCE (THE CHEMISTRY BURNS)
"When you start loving someone, you start to have fears" - Do Min Joon
my gif gif kim soo hyun kim soohyun jeon ji hyun jun ji hyun you who came from the stars you from another star Do Min Joon my lover from another star you from the stars

  • I SHIP SONG YI AND MIN JOON SO HARD THAT IT TURNED TO A ROCKET SHIP.
  • There was no rush in their relationship, it started really funny and a 'she is insufferable' & 'he is too hostile sometimes' kind that sometimes you just want them to talk to each other for a whole episode and watch them bicker over rubbish things.
  • The chemistry between the characters were PALPABLE.
  • There are each others' rock when they are about to hit the bottom. Their relationship was bent and tested painfully because of  Do Min Joon's future departure. I AM NOT GOING TO CRY
  • HARDSHIPS. Oh, there are a lot. expect ANGST!!!!!1111
CINEMATOGRAPHY (COOL DUDE COOL)
The production didn't cut short the fund for the drama. Everything just appeared so real not the crappy kind of effects. And kudos to the cameraman for hitting the right angles. I swear it really added to the awesomeness of the drama.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE (oh there's such thing?)
  • Let's just say that there are many loopholes in the drama.
  • The sound track didn't amaze me. I found it extremely mediocre. Good thing that the characters are so good that some scenes don't even need musical background just to bask the emotions.
  • Hui Kyung is the bestfriend of Song Yi and has been in love with her for 15 years already! And it just saddened me that despite EVERYTHING that he has done, there's no proper way to atleast appease his sacrifices. I understand that he doesn't need a rebound or something, but I AM JUST SO MAD because he deserves a really good ending :-((
  • I kinda recoil from the mom of Song Yi. She's too full of the ambition of being famous and rich forever. It's just annoying how much she pushes Song Yi to do this and that just to stay at the top.
  • Se Mi bitch. HAHA Oops sorry. Actually I like her being an infatuating antagonist and I don't know why I am putting her in this list.
OVERALL, whew really I reached this part????

If you are looking for an engaging plot-line; likable, swoon-worthy and dimensional characters and refreshing and star-crossed romance this drama is for you. There may be a few loopholes in the plot, but because I thoroughly enjoyed and loved it all in all, I came to neglect them and just continue to GUSH over the drama!

  1. I just skimmed since I haven't finished this yet, haha! But I love Cheon Song Yi so far! Hilarious. Not a fan of Obsidian, though. Maybe that's why I'm a bit uninterested with this series, haha!
