Cruel Beauty

Synopsis:
Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl's journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.

With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she's ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle-a shifting maze of magical rooms-enthralls her.

As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex's secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.
Cruel Beauty is one dark, twisted retelling of Beauty and a Beast. I am not sure how to correctly describe its premise, but it is a mix of magic, historical fiction and greek mythology. Ofcourse there's the course of romance in here. I enjoyed the first chapters, but I found myself bored and just skimming the latter which I found ironic since the said climax (and exciting parts) are found on the 150 + pages of the book.

So what I expected was like this:

What we got is a strong, tough, obstinate heroine, Nyx. (Nyx is the goddess of Night? I mean in greek myth she's Night also the mother of Tartarus? OMG Too much Percy Jackson) We got to meet Nyx, the MC, who is to marry the Gentle Lord (a demon). The arrangement started from a bargain between his Nyx's father & the Gentle Lord. Since then, Nyx started to loath everyone around her. She believed that her fate is to be killed and not to be the hero that everyone is expecting her to be. She fakes all smile and control her anger from chewing her into a mess of crude words. But just like any other person, she could be bent to the extreme until she broke. She has her demons and that's the thing that Ignifex (Gentle Lord) loves the most about her.

Huh? Gentle Lord loving a mortal? A demon LOVING A MORTAL. Ha? Ha? Oh hell yes. Despite his arrogant demeanor, the Gentle Lord has a past that taut & haunts him. That is what made my interest waver. There's so much alien words (except for the Greek terminologies) that were served in the platter for the readers to absorb all at once. It's like running in a marathon, I know I am way way way way behind, but I still keep catching up until I couldn't bare it anymore. The pacing was smooth, placid, but terms and legends just baffled me. TOO MUCH.

The romance made my head swam in utter nuisance. Basically because Nyx and Ignifex goes from "I AM GOING TO KILL YOU" to "I LOVE YOU" then they'll go back to taunting and threatening each other  again then back to the I LOVE YOU's. That's why I said earlier, I can't keep up. But in the end they go:

Cruel Beauty? This perfectly fits both main characters. Because behind those beautiful faces, strong-willed persona hides their wicked  & dark characters. Made the readers realize that monster or not, anyone can have their own versions of happily ever after. Overall, it was an engrossing and enjoyable read (at first), it just failed to keep my attention in place. Greek mythology, Greek&Rome legends & magic in one standalone book can bring turbulence, but the beauty of this book is that it was blessed with bewitching - almost magical prose.

DIVERGENT
Release Date: March 21, 2014
Summit Production
Director: Neil Burger
Casts: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort

Can I just say that there's a massive promotion of this movie here in the Philippines? This craze didn't happen during City of Bones, Vampire Academy, The Host etc and I was like "WHOAA TO THE OH?"

There's anxiety alongside with excitement for there's this trend in the YA book to movie adaptations recently. I don't want to expect too much for it is the root of heartache. And yes that's Shakespeare reference. Ha. But I guess my anxiety was replaced with relief for I thoroughly enjoy and relish every moment of the film!

MOVIE TAGLINE: What makes you different, makes you dangerous.
BADASS! I am so happy that the tagline they made isn't at all cheesy and ridiculous. It's fierce and it gives an impression of how intense the movie is all about.

MOVIE POSTER: HA! I have mixed feelings about the poster for I totally approve the background + the Ferris Wheeeeel (although it has a minimal appearance like why did they have to cut it!!) The font used for the title is totally cool and I can say well-improved version of the book's title cover.

LET'S DISCUSS:

Oh my freaking cow! This movie totally deserves the anticipation and hype it is receiving! My heart was on my throat while I was watching this yesterday and I just couldn't form enough coherent words after I finish watching it. And up to now I am still not sure onto how will this post would turn out for the only adjectives in my mind are all synonymous to AWESOME.

When it comes to the action scenes, the production and casts made sure that it will be realistic and well, violent. I am not saying that there's gore and too much brutality, but it's great that they made the fight and action scenes realistic to the eyes. When it comes the visual effect + the setting, I was really in awe with how they came up with a "bringing the setting in book to life." From the uniforms of each faction down to every faction's place down to the futuristic effect and advancement of technology it's very Ya-ish. Very divergent book-ish.

When it comes to the casting, the production made a risky decision of not including Uriah in the film. We all know how important his role was in this book and also to the upcoming sequels. Also, I have an issue with Al because he was supposed to be wimpier. But keeping those aside, I think the casting was really good. Each artist delivered their roles in character with easy charm. This portion is to be discussed on the latter.

If there's one thing that really made this movie outstanding, it is the pacing!! In a span of 2 hours ++ they were able to execute the 300+ pages of the book. And they go straight to what is substantial and what need to be emphasized. Even those people who haven't read the book might even get what it is all about minus the inside jokes of the Divergent fandom.

HOW TRUE IS THE MOVIE TO THE BOOK? About 80-90% should do. I mean it always happen, some changes that has to be done. Some scenes that has to be removed because of the limited air time. Some important jokes and dialogues among the characters were slashed out too. And ofcourse, some scenes that they needed to add so that the flow of the film will be lament. We'll get a clear explanation on: a.) What is this norm the Erudites are imposing. b.) Why are the divergents a threat to the factions. c.) FACTION OVER BLOOD d.) FEARS

Female empowerment has again been an issue that the critiques thoroughly discussed. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU GUYS.Divergent has proven that heroines can be as tough and can be as brave as any other hero. So much feminism in this film, but let's not forget how Four helped Tris in every way that he could.

Rating this a perfect 5 because despite the discrepancy from the book, it was still amazing and I really enjoyed every second of the film! How about you guys? Share your opinion and maybe link your onw review post! :D

Update #1: TERRRRM IS OVER
Third term is overrrr, like overr. Can I get a hell yes?!?!? You know what? I never thought that my freshman year in college would be this distressing. I mean, duh, first year but it feels like I am a graduating student filing all the requirements and passing my major subjects. Ugh. The main reason I spaced out from blogging & (reading :(() was basically because of school (as usual). The endless demands of the professors + the mind-racking exams = ZOMBIE LIFE + NO SOCIAL LIFE. Yep, that happened.

Update #2: Post-birthday.
Last march 7, I celebrated my 17th birthday! Hoooray! I had the chance to be with my family and bestfriends for the whole day! Isn't that just wonderful? My friends and I had an overnight at my place and we played different kinds of card games 'til 3am. Craaazy!!! On my birthday itself, Hazel of Stay Bookish, featured me on her Story Soundtrack! The timing was pretty surprising since it was a coincidence that she posted my SS on my birthday without her knowing it was my birthday. Omg. Check out my featured SS and also Hazel's blog for all the awesomeness! (Btw it was Champion that I used! What's new with that?) Sad to say, I didn't buy any physical books for my birthday that is why for this one month break, I am planning to buy & read a lot of books! And I am starting it with Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover. I miss being immersed in fictional worlds. My life had been revolving around calculus, matrices and chemistry for the past months. I miss the leisure of reading and being able to rave about bookish stuff. :(

Update #3: UPCOMING REVIEWS
Twisted by Emma Chaste- got an ARC, but I can't still quote some scenes or dialogues that is why I am stalling my review for this 'til its release date.
White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout - this is like my 8956565th book from Jennifer Armentrout.
Addicted to you by Kristina Ritchie - I read this last January, but forgot to publish my drafted review *facepalm*

Update #4: Book to Movie Discussion (+ first post!)
DIVERGENT PREMIERS TOMORROW IN THE PHILIPPINES *shakes all of you* I am now on the train of the "book-to-movie" discussions. This is a simple feature where I share my thoughts and express my feelings over some book adaptations. Bloggers can also take part by linking their movie reviews :) The first one on the grill (yes a grill) is Divergent! So excited to watch it *jump jump jump*!! Next will be Vampire Academy movie for I had watched it but haven't made a post about it :(

Update #6: New blog layout + header.
TENNANT. WHY.

And I can sense it that you have that "AGAIN?" face right now. It's still the same base layout that I have ages ago, but I made some changes like the header, social icons, post dividers, jump posts, background, color scheme etc. YEEEEEY. I am happy with my header right now! What do you guys think? I still have to apply the new color scheme to the other parts of my blog but so far so good. And I wouldn't waste another 4 hours tweaking this current layout. #AchievementUnlcoked

Update #7: Moved account on twitter.
I was using my personal account for my bookish & blog stuff and I am getting tweets from my irl friends about all the book stuff that I am talking about. They aren't used to the book blogger side of me, I guess. I decided to have a separate twitter for my book blogging escapade! From @abbbbbbbbbbbz to @abbbzandbookz. Yay finally having the freedom to rave about books without irl people/friends judging. LOL. And please i need to follow more twitter accounts! Link me your twitter accounts please ♥

Update #8: Post-birthday giveaway.
ADAM. JUST. DON'T OMG

Just a small book giveaway for PH readers. Sorry int'l friends :( One winner of Legend by Marie Lu (paperback) & one winner of Angelfall by Susan Ee (paperback). And yes, these are two of my favorite books of all time and I hope more people will have the chance to read these gems.

Update #9: I ran out of things to tell you guys HAHA. Can I ask a simple favor? If you could pray for my final grades this term. I am being optimistic about my grade in calculus, but anxiety level reached Saturn alreaaaaady! *bits nails* *imagining myself biting my nails* Eeeep. A small prayer means a lot :) Sigh :D

If you reached this part, then, congratulations!! for keeping up with my blabbering HAHA. Rafflecopter is just below :D Goodluck! ;) Have a nice day everyone!

Thought: Does Kasie West ever go wrong? I'm escalated that my first read for 2017 was a squee-filled one. This was utterly adorable. The main character, Lily, is a very witty person. It wasn't hard to love her and her family.
