Frosbite
Author: Richelle Mead
Series: Vampire Academy #2
Date of Publication: April 2008

Synopsis:
Join the Vampire Academy and Experience Augmented Reality. Click here and put your face on the cover of a best seller book. Are you tempted? Watch "Vampire Academy" come to life with your likeness! Rose loves Dimitri, Dimitri might love Tasha, and Mason would die to be with Rose...

It's winter break at St. Vladimir's, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy's crawling with Guardians--including Rose's hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if handto- hand combat with her mom wasn't bad enough, Rose's tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason's got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa's head while she's making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy's not taking any risks.... This year, St. Vlad's annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.

But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price...
THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM is the right synopsis for this book.

I am basically torn. Really, this book was a good sequel, but it was too plain and.....ordinary? I just think that the first book had more badass-ness than this book had. Despite the banters and wit, I was still craving for some nail-biting scenes that will probably put me on the edge of my seat. Feel me, guys? DO YOU FEEL ME?????
"[...] it's not like I'll magically become an adult on my eighteenth birthday."
Why did I even start with my quibbles. I don't know. So let's make up for that and start a positive one: This was highly entertaining.  As usual, Rose Hathaway steals the spotlight away from everyone. She's really cool and kickass...but also feminine in sorts. I love how she's reckless sometimes, and always find a way to be adorable! Her character is so realistic since VA and I always find myself smiling at her comebacks and even on her rash actions. On the other hand, we still have the others: Lissa & Christian's relationship still going strong. Mason who was too ridiculously in love but adorbs. Dimitri who still can't snag a place in my heart (I AM SORRY GUYS). Then we have Adrian who seemed so cocky and confident....and weird. He's a playful bastard, you know the usual enigmatic guy that can still get under the skin of readers (or is it just me). I love the new twist of his character. I also liked Tasha and her insights. I wholeheartedly agree to her preposition. It was basically what I wanted to propose since VA but heck I am just a reader.

I noted that the relationship of Rose and Janine (her mother) was a little gripping. I grew up with a mom who's always been there and putting us first ahead of anything so it pained me to read that Rose and her mother have a very detached, distant relationship. I just hope that it'll be fix soon because poor mother-child relationship really makes me edgy.

Last rant: Dear Authors, KILLING THE THIRD WHEEL IS NEVER THE ANSWER. :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
(an angry Gollum to make my pointXD shit I just realized how ghastly and scary this gif is)

  1. You're totally right, this is the calm before the storm! Just wait until Shadow Kiss, it's only uphill from here on out ;) It gets better, don't you worry :) Adrian eventually shows another side to him, he's not all cocky and confident. Great review!

    1. YAY!!! I knew it is going to be the calm before the storm. It was plain so I think the gruesome parts come on the latter of the series. I am intrigued of Mr. Ivashkov. Thank you, Rachel!

  2. So I haven't ever read this series (I'm going to now go see if I can find your review of the first book) and I don't know..... how good is it? It seems like it's more of a "guilty-pleasure" book. And no one ever really talks about it much... so should I give it a shot?

    1. Yes! Give it a shot :D The main character is really funny and there's more to it than the average vampire teen fiction story.

  3. If I remember correctly, my favorite book from the series is Shadow Kiss (I haven't actually finished the series but I think Shadow Kiss was the best). So while you didn't enjoy this one you'll probably enjoy the others?

Anyways, YESSS I was so mad when the third wheel died. That's not how you fix a love triangle!! Gah.

    1. OMG Shadow Kiss is next on my TBR ASAP!!! HAHA I heard so many good things about that book so I think you are right about it being your favorite :)

That was my peeve of all. Jeebus, the author could've handled the triangle in a more less ridicule way, but UGH.

  4. How can you not like Dimitri?? XD I am in love with him. Still, I thought this book was a bit boring and hated to you-know-what that happened to Rose's friend. BUT, I really thought meeting Rose's mom was interesting and she's so cool. Their relationship will work out, sure of it ;) Cute review!

  5. I've heard so many great things about Richelle Mead and her books, but for some reason I never picked them up. Your review has definitely convinced me though! I love the sound of the romance and the friendship, and can't wait to dive into them for myself. Thanks for sharing and, as always, BRILLIANT review! <3

  8. LOL YES. That Gollum gif is really scary. Please promise me that's not actually what your face looks like when you're mad? Cause if that's the case imam run away from you right now. Haha, just kidding.

I think I'm the only kid in the block who still hasn't started this series yet. I mean, I *have* the book. I just don't have any desire to read it just yet. But you, my dear, are making me want to reconsider. HIHIHHI~

    1. I think it's worse than that ;) ;) LOL Oooh, I think you're going to love the wit here. Or maybe the actual plot because it has ~substance~ and an actual ~plot~ that doesn't center on romances. :D

  9. You're just starting Vampire Academy (well, you're done with the 2nd book but yeah)! OMG! Now I feel like my desire to read this series has been reignited again. I've been seeing so many reviews about Mead's spin-off series (or is that a spin-off?) that just thinking about starting from the very beginning seems too daunting.

Killing characters? HAHAHA. Gollum sure looks scary. I really wanted to meet all of these characters. Maybe I'll catch up with you and read them once and for all. Great review, Abby!

  10. I haven't read this book for a few years, BUT ADRIAN, ABBY. Seriously,he is my number one reason for loving this series as much as I do.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for Dimitri, but Adrian just has a thing and he wheedled his way into my heart and he is never letting go - ever. Pretty much like our beloved Day *sighs dreamily*

  11. If you love Adrian you'll love the spinoff series, Bloodlines. I was so very sad at the punch to the gut that happens at the end of this! Nice to see you're enjoying the series, Abby! Great review and scary GIF! Gollum always gave me the creeps!
